On Monday Nil by Mouth helped launch Book Week Scotland in style in the company of more than 200 children in Galashiels.
The event, hosted in the atmospheric MacArts Centre, brought together Primary 3 pupils from Balmoral, Burgh, Clovenfords, Glendinning Terrace, Langlee, St Margaret’s, St Peter’s and Tweedbank primaries to enjoy performances from award winning children’s authors Alan Windram and Vivian French. Alan’s work focuses on encouraging children to embrace difference and Vivian ran a writing workshop for older pupils helping them learn the skills required to become storytellers.
The event was funded through grants from Book Week Scotland and Morgan Sindall Construction who have been supporting Nil by Mouth with spreading its message of tolerance and change in areas where it is carrying out construction projects. Local support was also provided by the Hayward Sanderson Trust who donated to cover the venue costs for the day long event. Nil by Mouth staff will also be delivering a number of workshops to classes in the town over the next few months thanks to support from Morgan Sindall.
The charity would like to thank the Scottish Book Trust for it’s support and encouragement over recent years and for including this event as part of its extensive nationwide Book Week Scotland programme to celebrate books and using them as a way of bringing people from all ages and walks of life together. Huge thanks also go to the children, adult helpers and teachers who made sure everyone made it to and from the venue and our two amazing authors who sprinkled everyone with their literary magic.
