Tooling Up
Pupils from two schools in Coatbridge have become the latest to take part in our STEM Together programme.
Nil by Mouth united pupils from Shawhead and St Bernard’s Primary Schools providing schools with free access to a range of specialist tools, equipment and STEM activities when they come together.
The promotion of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) skills are highly important in the school curriculum and pupils had the opportunity to use special child safe tools to design and construct homes and forms of transport made from cardboard for pets and class mascots.
The event was made possible thanks to a donation from the Gilbert Elliot Memorial (GEM) Trust established to commemorate the memory of Gilbert Wilkie Elliot, a young man who like so very many of his generation, died in the trenches during the terrible years of the First World War. He has a simple memorial in the graveyard of Pozieres in France. His descendant David Urquhart, one of the best know names in the Scottish travel industry, established the Trust with the aim of investing in charities where a small donation can make a big difference. The Trust funded the purchase of new STEM equipment which the charity will use as part of the project.
It’s the charity’s second STEM mission in Coatbridge in recent months with an earlier visit to meet with pupils at St Stephen’s and Riverbank Primaries. Nearly 3,000 pupils have participated in the programme from schools across Scotland.
