Nil by Mouth’s 'STEM Together' programme kicked off 2026 on the west coast with a visit to Greenock.
Resisting the temptation to take a New Year’s Dip in the Clyde during the icy conditions Nil by Mouth Education Officer Jamie Lithgow helped pupils from Whinhill and St Patrick’s Primary Schools enjoy a day of learning and building together.

During 2025 40 schools took part in the project, which has been supported by the Conundrum Trust, which sees pupils join forces, assigned roles and working together to construct devices using state of the art MTa Stem Kits. There is a particular focus on visual learning and problem solving across a range of 24 STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) tasks involving construction, hydraulics, conceptual thinking, accurate measurement and testing the safety of designs.
The Whinhill community made their neighbours from St Patrick’s very welcome with staff from both schools rolling up their sleeves to help the pupils beat the clock and build wheelbarrows within the allocated time.
Over the next few weeks the project will roll into West Lothian and Midlothian with pit stops in the Scottish Borders in between. During March a two week tour of North Lanarkshire primary schools is being finalised with support from the council.
